Castillo de San Felipe

One of the most iconic spots is Castillo de San Felipe, an impressive fortress that dominates the city skyline. You can walk through its tunnels, climb the walls, and admire panoramic views of Cartagena. When I visited, I wandered along the ramparts and imagined the battles that once took place here—it felt like stepping back in time. You must go early in the morning if you would like to avoid crowds and take your time exploring every corner.

Getsemaní Neighborhood

Another area you should not miss is Getsemaní, a vibrant neighborhood known for its colorful streets and artistic vibe. You can stroll around the plazas and admire street murals, and you might encounter local musicians, dancers, and artists performing in the streets. If you take your time, you could also stop at cozy cafés or artisan shops to enjoy traditional Colombian snacks. When I went there, I had a fresh coconut drink while watching the sunset over Plaza Trinidad, and it was one of the highlights of my trip.

La Muralla and City Walls

If you are more adventurous, you must walk along the city walls, known as La Muralla. The views of the Caribbean Sea are breathtaking, and you can sit down on the stone benches to watch the waves and take amazing pictures. You could also keep walking until you reach the historic plazas along the wall, where the city’s energy blends history and modern life perfectly.

For history and culture lovers, you have to explore the hidden streets of the walled city. You might want to wander through narrow alleys, discover small squares, and peek into colonial courtyards. If you take a guided walking tour, you could learn about the city’s colonial past and the stories behind its colorful facades. I walked these streets once, and although it was easy to get lost, I felt rewarded when I found a quiet café tucked away in a corner.

In Cartagena, every street you walk and every landmark you visit has its own charm. Whether you are exploring Castillo de San Felipe, strolling through Getsemaní, or walking along the historic walls, you must experience different corners of the city to truly understand why it is considered one of Colombia’s most enchanting destinations.
